Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal Tips

It’s best to plan ahead for your Lifetime Laser hair removal appointment. Follow these simple steps to ensure you get the BEST possible outcome for your treatment.

As any dermatologist would recommend, protect your skin from the sun. If you plan to have laser hair removal, you will have to take it a step further and completely protect the area you plan to treat from any sun. This is simply because tanned skin has a higher melanin level which essentially confuses the laser. With un-tanned skin, the laser seeks out the hair follicles in the growth stage. Advanced technology in laser works by sending a beam of light to the follicles using selective photothermolysis. The laser is able to distinguish between skin and hair but when the melanin levels are high in your skin, darker skin colors can sometimes have side effects like discoloration or a slightly higher discomfort level. So be generous with sunscreen or even better, wear long pants and tops to keep those areas out of the sun completely!

Shave! The ultimate goal of your treatments at Lifetime Laser is to stop shaving. For your appointment, however, the closer shave you have at the time of your treatment the better!  Don’t be surprised, if at the time of your appointment your technician gives you an additional dry shave. Just think, shaving will soon become a fond memory!

During the treatment, you may experience some discomfort especially when the laser is passed over a bone area.  However, the laser is moved quickly over the area and any discomfort is gone as soon as you have time to think “this is slightly uncomfortable!”

There are also topical numbing creams available. It’s important to apply the cream an hour prior to treatment to take effect and numb the area. If you think you might want the cream, be sure to ask for it when you book your appointment so you can take a tube home with you.

Following your treatment, you can apply ice packs to the area at home. For just a few minutes, the ice packs cool off the skin and reduce any redness.  After a few hours, skin looks completely normal and feels great!

During the days and weeks after laser treatment avoid shaving the area. The hairs will die, come to the surface and fall out. If you notice they aren’t falling out, gently exfoliate them in the shower only after a few weeks have passed.

A series of treatments will be needed to get the results you desire. However, you will notice almost immediately that hair growth will slow down, hairs will thin and overall sections will not grow back (even after just a few treatments). A maintenance program can be set up and Lifetime Laser can help you pick the best treatment for your skin!  So get started now... summer is just around the corner!  Don’t delay, call today!

What Does the Treatment Include?

Depending on the amount of hair treated, the procedure varies from patient to patient. Generally the treatment will include:

  • Wearing safety eyewear to protect the practitioner and the patient’s eyes from the laser light during the procedure

  • A small hand piece will be used that touches the skin to deliver the laser light. A light spray of coolant onto the skin will be felt just before each laser pulse.

  • A test area will be done prior to the entire treatment. Your full treatment may be done on the same day or up to two weeks later, depending on the skins reaction.

  • Most patients experience little discomfort at treatment site because of the dynamic cooling device.

  • The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold. Topical anesthesia may be requested based on individual preferences or tolerances. Be sure to discuss this with your practitioner in advance of the laser treatment.

  • The procedure can take as little as ten minutes or up to an hour, depending on the treated area.

  • The treated area may be become pink or red within 30 minutes of treatment; this may last a few hours to several days and is relieved with the application of ice or cooling gels.
